TERMS TO KNOW

Here are a few terms that will help you understand what people are talking about around the office.

Active Candidate – The term active candidate refers to a candidate who is actively seeking a new position.

Backfill – A backfill is an act of replacing a candidate or refilling a previously completed search assignment due to the fall-off of the original candidate. In other words, if a candidate was to quit or be terminated from a position that we placed that candidate in, we may be required to refill AKA backfill that position with a new, qualified candidate.

Benchmark – Benchmarking is a technique used to set standards by comparing one candidate to another. 

Bill RateThe bill rate is the hourly rate charged by ISGF to the client for the services rendered by an ISGF contract employee. A bill rate includes the burden, the pay rate, and profit margin.

Boolean SearchA Boolean search or Boolean string is a group of search works linked together by command words and functions used to instruct a search engine on what to look for and what not to look for. Example: orlando AND (hotel OR rental) AND downtown AND pool

Burden – Burden is the combined cost associated with employing a contract employee. The burden includes taxes, workers comp, unemployment charges and insurance. 

Candidate – Typically, a candidate is a person who has applied to and has been pre-qualified for a specific role or job category.

Client SubmittalA client submittal, often referred to as just submittal, occurs when the account manager reviews, approves, and most importantly, presents a candidate to the client.

Conversion Rate – A conversion rate is a predetermined dollar amount required to convert a contract employee to a direct employee of the client. For example, if a client was to hire an ISGF contractor on a temporary basis to help them with a project and then decide that they wanted to employ that contractor directly, a conversion rate would be assesed as a fee for doing so.

Contractor – A contractor, also known as a consultant, is an individual who works on contract positions or temporary assignments.

Counter-Offer – A counter offer is a subsequent offer made by a candidate’s current employer in response to a new employment offer received by an outside company.

Direct Hire This term refers to positions in which a candidate is hired as a direct employee of the client. These employees will fall under the client’s taxes, benefits, and insurance. 

EndAn end refers to the last day that a contract employee is on a project or assignment, or when the contractor ends a project. The difference between an end and a fall-off is that an end is predetermined or not the fault of the contractor where a fall-off is unexpected (not predetermined) and normally the fault of the contractor.

Fall-offA fall-off occurs when a candidate’s employment, contract or direct hire, is unexpectedly terminated during the guarantee period previously negotiated with that client.

Guarantee – A guarantee refers to the predetermined amount of time in which we assure the satisfaction of the client for a placed candidate. The standard guarantee period is 90 calendar days but is some situations can be less.

Internal SubmittalAn internal submittal, sometimes referred to as an account manager submittal, occurs after a recruiter fully vets and interviews a candidate and thinks that the candidate is qualified for the position. At this point, the recruiter sends the candidate to the account manager for review and approval with the expectation that the account manager will send the candidate to the client. 

Interview An interview is a physical act of a client interviewing a candidate. Interviews can be conducted on-site or in person, over the phone, or via web video chat.

Job BoardA job board is an online tool that provides a list of open job opportunities. 

Passive CandidateA passive candidate is a candidate who is not currently in the job market but may entertain a new role under the right conditions.

Pay RateThe pay rate is the monetary amount played directly to a contract employee.

Payment TermsPayment terms outline the amount of time allotted for the client to pay the fee issued for the placement of a candidate. This phrase is most often used in direct hire context; standard direct hire payment terms are net 10.

Pending – Any job or candidate currently in final interview process with the potential to close.

PlacementA placement occurs when a client hires a candidate.

Pipeline – A collection of contacts, candidates, and leads that can be leveraged to drive revenue.

QC/EQCQCs and EQCs are quality checks regarding a placed candidate. QC refers to the quality check intended for the placed candidate and EQC refers to the quality check intended for the Client.

Rollover – Rollover is the process of a contract employee turning into a direct employee of the client.

SendoutA sendout, sometimes referred to as an interview request, is when a client requests to interview a candidate.

Service Agreement – A service agreement, also known as a contract, is the agreement between our firm and the client. This agreement outlines the terms of the services we intend to provide. Internally, you may also hear this referred to as a fee agreement.

Short ListShort list is a term that refers to a list of potential candidates that a recruiter has identified as possible matches for an open position.

Sourcing – Sourcing is the process of searching for and identifying potential candidates through a verity of resources.

StartA start is a contract term that identifies the day that a contract employee starts a new position.

Target List – A target list is a list of potential candidates or companies you wish to make contact with. Went Dark – The term “went dark” refers to a candidate who has abruptly or unexpectedly stopped all communications with ISGF.

Went Dark – The term “went dark” refers to a candidate who has abruptly or unexpectedly stopped all communications with ISGF. This is also commonly known as “ghosting”.
