GAPS IN EMPLOYMENT

Lesson Progress

When reviewing a resume always look for gaps in employment. If you notice a gap, regardless of length, inquire what that candidate was doing during that time. Odds are a candidate with a short-term gap in employment has a perfectly good explanation, and this is not really a red flag. Long-term gaps in employment are much more of a potential red flag.

There are two things to look out for when investigating gaps in employment. First is, if the candidate has been applying or interviewing for positions but not getting hired. If this is the case, we need to identify why other companies are not hiring this individual. Commonly we find that candidates in this situation are requesting too much money, are not as qualified as their resume leads them to be, or they have a poor personality.
